Once a CavalierOnce a Cavalier by Linda O. Johnston

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I brought my book from the office home yesterday, and I finished reading it last night. It was Once a Cavalier by Linda O Johnston, and it's part of Jove's "Time Passages" line of time-travel romances. Main characters were Dr Larryn Maeller and Sir Thomas Northby, Duke of Seldrake.

While in London for a medical conference, Larryn becomes enthralled by a portrait of the Duke of Seldrake. She ends up falling into a present-day mist and back in time, to 1666 London. There, she meets the Duke, Thomas Northby, in the flesh. Larryn knows she must have traveled through time for a purpose, and she reasons if she can accomplish the task, she will return to her own time.

When Thomas finds a strange woman on the roof of his home, he is confused and wary. As someone who has been illegally aiding the children of families decimated by plague, he thinks at first that Larryn is a spy sent to find him out. Her claim of being a physician seems unrealistic, but when Larryn is able to help him treat the children in his care, he begins to believe she has some training in healing.

Together, the two of them must navigate the intricacies of the court of King Charles, save as many children as they can, and come to terms with the fact that each is falling in love with the other.

The story was enjoyable and well-written. Characters were three-dimensional, and I found the historical aspects fascinating. If I still devoured time-travel romances like I used to, I don't doubt I would have liked it more. I should not have been surprised, considering the author, that King Charles Cavalier spaniels figured heavily in this book. It would be nice if she could write about different breeds of dogs or even different pets.

Favorite line: "I don't feign ignorance of anything, if I don't want to."

As far as time-travel, historical romance is concerned, this was very good. It's no longer my cuppa tea, but I did enjoy reading it. Giving it a solid four.

Nothing to Fear But Ferrets (Kendra Ballantyne, Pet-sitter Mystery, #2)Nothing to Fear But Ferrets by Linda O. Johnston

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I brought my work book home with me on the weekend, since there were only a few short chapters left, and I finished reading it last night. The book was Nothing to Fear But Ferrets by Linda O Johnston. It's part of her "Pet-Sitter" mystery series, featuring former-lawyer-turned-pet-sitter Kendra Ballentyne. I've read another book in this series, but it's not one I follow closely enough to worry about what order I read them in.

After clearing her own name of murder, Kendra is working towards getting her suspended law license back. In the meantime, she continues to earn money by pet-sitting and renting out her beautiful house, while she lives in the small apartment over the garage. When Kendra discovers a dead body in her house, surrounded by ferrets, she gets drawn into another murder investigation. Her tenant, reality TV star Charlotte, begs Kendra to prove her innocence, while Charlotte's live-in hunk, Yul, only wants his ferrets to be exonerated. Kendra had sworn not to get involved in another murder mystery, but when it's this close to home, how can she stay out of it?

In the meantime, Kendra's relationship with PI Jeff Hubbard is strained when Jeff's ex-wife (whom Kendra had no prior knowledge of) shows up, asking for help dealing with a stalker. Kendra throws herself into her work as a pet-sitter, her investigation into the murder, and her studies to get her law license back. She knows she's getting close to a murderer when she receives a threatening phone call, but Kendra isn't backing down; she's determined to get to the truth.

I'm not that enamored of this series. Kendra is far too attached to her dog, King Charles Cavalier spaniel Lexie, to the point that it gets tedious. She's constantly taking the dog with her, which includes pushing her away when she tries to clamber onto her lap while Kendra is driving. Can you say 'accident waiting to happen, with a furry airbag'? I thought Kendra behaved like a twelve year-old when Jeff's ex showed up. If you want to end it with him, do it in a dignified, mature fashion. Also, I got annoyed reading about Kendra's thoughts on one of her neighbors. She's fat, we get it. There's no need to expound on it in such a rude and condescending manner. I am guessing the author has hang-ups about overweight people. It's obvious, from reading the author blurb at the back of the book, that the author is equally fixated on her own King Charles Cavalier spaniel named...you guessed it, Lexie.

Favorite line: Cynically, I'd concluded that most people should have been born with more than two index fingers, to give them more digits to point accusingly at others.

Not really fond of this series, nor the main character. I won't seek out other books in the series to read; I think I chose this one because the title amused me. Giving this one an average score.

Yes, I have been managing to read, too! However, I have been remiss in posting updates.

Book #12 was Feline Fatale by Linda O Johnston. It's part of a cozy mystery series, featuring attorney/pet-sitter Kendra Ballantyne, who is a self-proclaimed "murder magnet" and finds herself solving crimes. I had to slog through the book to finish it. One review on the front cover proclaimed the author as a "brilliant writer". I found the writing to be repetitive, redundant and boring. My apologies if any of you likes Johnston, knows Johnston or is Johnston. She needed a competent beta. *nods*

Book #13 was Seducing the Moon by Sherrill Quinn. This was a paranormal romance, in which the main male character was a werewolf. The plot was interesting, and the female lead was spunky and self-reliant, which I like. Some plot elements were left unresolved, but this appears to be part of a series. Yes, I would read other books in this verse.

Book #14 was To Hate and to Hold by Dakota Rebel. Now, this book was engrossing; I read it in two days. It was a m/m vampire romance, and the two main characters reminded me quite a bit of Harry and Draco, in that they were constantly bickering and fighting and challenging one another. I enjoyed the characterizations, and I really loved how Jamie and Ethan's relationship progressed. The sex scenes were frequent and hot. *grins* Will definitely be looking for more m/m from this author!
