My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Last night I read an ebook novella, The Case of the Naughty Santa, by Waverly Curtis. It's part of the "Barking Detective" mystery series, featuring a talking Chihuahua named Pepe. This was somewhat short, but it was chaptered; thus, I'm counting it. Woo!
Pepe's owner and partner, Geri Sullivan, is having a blue Christmas because she's apart from her boyfriend, Felix. Pepe takes it upon himself to book them tickets to LA to visit. They arrive in time to end up in the midst of a madcap crime, involving reindeer who are stealing packages, a missing dog, and a dead Santa. When Felix is arrested for murder, Pepe and Geri set out to prove his innocence.
Cute and fun. I liked the talking dog angle, and Pepe had an amusing voice. The narrative was in his pov, giving it extra pizazz.
Favorite line: I took solace in the Chihuahua's credo: all is fair when you are up against anything bigger than yourself, which is most everything.
I enjoyed the story, but it was too short to rate it any higher than average.
