My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Last night I finished reading Moonshine & Murder, which is the first book in the "Moonshine Hollow" series by Kathleen Brooks.
Zoey Mathers was an up and coming entertainment attorney whose career came crashing down when she attempted to extract one of her clients from a sketchy situation in an even sketchier club. Zoey takes the opportunity to follow her dream of becoming a baker. On a whim, she packs up and moves to Moonshine Hollow. Once she settles in and begins making friends and building her new business, Zoey realizes this is the best thing she's ever done for herself.
Zoey's life is upended once again when she unwittingly walks into a battle between witches and accidentally absorbs the power of one of them. As if that wasn't bad enough, Zoey literally stumbles over a dead body. Her new BFF is blamed for the man's death, and Zoey takes it upon herself to prove her friend's innocence. Lucky for her, she has new powers and new allies to help her.
I enjoyed the story. It was encouraging to see how Zoey made some damned fine lemonade out of the lemons life dealt her. The zany characters in town were amusing, and Zoey has two potential love interests. However, editing errors scattered throughout proved to be distracting.
Favorite line: Was it the murderer? Was she going to die with her throat slit in the middle of the street after dragging her dying body out there to get help? Why had she come here? And was she wearing clean underwear?
I'd have given this a solid four, but the editing errors knock it down to a three.
