Book 71, 2015
Dec. 6th, 2015 12:56 amAfter indulging in a two-hour nap (why didn't I just go to bed, honestly?), I was refreshed enough to finish reading Spellbent. It's an urban fantasy by Lucy A Snyder, and it's the first in her series about Jessie Shimmer.
Jessie is a Talent, meaning she has magical abilities. Her boyfriend Cooper is teaching her to use her powers. When the two of them try to end a drought by calling up a rainstorm, they accidentally open a portal, and Cooper is sucked into it. Jessie is left to deal with the fallout, which includes battling a demon and human enemies alike. She's branded an outlaw and has no one to help her except for her familiar, a ferret named Pal.
Jessie is determined to find and save Cooper, even if it means she must go through hell. Literally.
What an amazing story! Jessie was sort of a Mary Sue, but she was somewhat clueless about her true abilities, so she was not an unlikable heroine. It was fun to see her bumble her way through one mess after another, until she was able to save the day and wreak vengeance.
Five out of five!
