My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I stayed in for lunch yesterday at work, and I nearly finished my book. As a result, I brought it home and just now finished reading it. The book was Kitty Goes to Washington by Carrie Vaughn, and it's part of her "Kitty Norville" series, featuring Kitty--the late night radio DJ who's also a werewolf.
Now that supernaturals, such as werewolves and vampires, are out of the closet, the US Senate is holding a hearing on the matter. Kitty has been subpoenaed to testify, which is why she ends up in Washington DC. There, she encounters the vampire mistress of the city, a grizzled old werewolf, a sexy were-jaguar, a manic reporter, a bland scientist, and a holy roller Senator who wants to expose Kitty and her kind as monsters. As a radio host, Kitty is used to being heard and not seen, and that's the way she likes it. Unfortunately, several of her new acquaintances plot to put her face, and her transformation, on live TV.
Reading this ratcheted up my blood pressure. Luis, the were-jaguar was hot, but that's not what did it. It was the way Kitty was treated. While the plot was certainly fraught with tension and angst, it did a fine job of showcasing who the real monsters are.
Favorite line: Some frying pans made the fire look good.
The story was compelling, even as it was anxiety inducing. Kitty's good nature triumphed over the evils of mankind, and her willingness to help strangers and friends alike was heart warming. Characterizations were done well, and it was easy to become invested in the narrative.
