Legacy (Anna Strong Chronicles, #4)Legacy by Jeanne C. Stein

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I rocked through the rest of my "spare" book last night. It was Legacy by Jeanne C Stein, and it's the 4th in the "Anna Strong" urban fantasy series. I found myself favoring it over the regular book I'd chosen to read. Exciting!

As Anna continues to adapt to becoming a vampire, new challenges arise. Gloria, the self-centered actress who is the on-again-off-again lover of Anna's business partner, David, has asked her to investigate her own business partner, whom Gloria claims is blackmailing her. Anna doesn't even have a chance to begin looking into Gloria's case when the partner is murdered...and Gloria becomes the number one suspect. In the meantime, Anna encounters an Alpha female werewolf--one who claims to be the widow of the powerful vampire that Anna killed in self-defense. Anna's actions meant all of Avery's property and wealth became hers, but she wants no part of it. She's willing to just sign the entire estate over to Sandra, but there is something off about the female wolf...and something compelling.

So much going on in this story. I had read the first two in the series out of order, and I have not yet read the third book. Nevertheless, I did not feel as though I was lost and floundering. The plot was engrossing and characters were portrayed wonderfully. Minor complaints are that there really isn't any humor in these stories (I enjoy my urban fantasy sprinkled with humor, sue me), and the build-up with Sandra was far more exciting than the resolution. It left me feeling somewhat let down, as in, "That's it?" Hm. Oh, one other thing annoyed me. The cover illustration shows Anna wearing a bandolier, but at no time in the book did that ever happen. Hm, again.

Favorite lines:
♦ At least one thing will be fun today.
♦ Thrown out of two houses in two hours. A new record.

And, the "breath" line:
I don't realize I've been holding my breath until he drives the Jag up onto the bed.

This was one of those books that was compelling without being entertaining. Sounds odd, but that's the best way I can describe it. Giving it four stars.

The Becoming (Anna Strong Chronicles, #1)The Becoming by Jeanne C. Stein

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

So, it was Wednesday night when I finished reading The Becoming by Jeanne C Stein. It's the first book in her "Anna Strong" urban fantasy series, featuring bounty hunter Anna Strong, who is turned when a bust goes bad. I'd read the second book in the series and liked it well enough to get the first one. Eh.

Anna and her partner, David, are preparing to bring a white-collar criminal in. He resists arrest and attacks first David and then Anna. When Anna comes to, she's in the hospital, where she learns she was beaten and sexually assaulted. Anna has no memory of it, and she is quite numb to what happened. Her doctor, Grant Avery, wants her to see a counselor, but all Anna wants is to go home. She gets her way, but certain physical symptoms have her seeking out Avery again. He tells her she's becoming a vampire, and that he's one, too. Anna can't believe it at first, but she begins to realize he's telling her the truth. She no longer breathes, her reflection is fading, and she can't stomach real food.

Avery advises her to walk away from her old life, leave the mortals behind, and embrace her new reality, but Anna is reluctant, angry, and anxious. She has a boyfriend, DEA agent Max, and her family, as well as her partner and friend, David. However, when Anna is abducted by Revengers (mortals who know about vampires and make it their mission to destroy them), it's Avery she turns to. When her home is burned down, Avery offers her a place to stay. But, when David turns up missing, Anna will have to rely on herself to get him back.

It's a good thing I read the second book before this one, because if I'd read this one first, I wouldn't have read any others. It wasn't a bad story. Characterizations were done well, as was world-building, and the plot was engrossing. I simply dislike non-con immensely, and I also despise that worn-down trope of a woman being unable to think with anything but her panooch when she's confronted by a handsome, charismatic man. The fact that Anna couldn't see the forest for the trees made me want to throttle her.

Other things that bothered me were vampire characteristics. I liked that they could move about in the daytime (finally!), but the fact that they don't cast reflections is just odd. Also, their hearts beat, but they don't breathe? Made no sense.

Favorite line: "Wonderful. A fanged support group. Just what I've always wanted."

The story was raw and gritty, and there really wasn't any humor to lighten things up. Nevertheless, it was well-written. Giving it four stars:

I began reading Blood Drive, by Jeanne C Stein, yesterday, and I finished it today. It's the second book in her series featuring bounty hunter turned vampire, Anna Strong. I have not read the first book in the series, but the author did a good job of providing enough back story that I wasn't lost.

In the midst of her regular duties as a bounty hunter, Anna learns that her deceased brother may have fathered a child, and that the young girl is in trouble. Her mother contacts Anna's family to ask for help. As Anna begins searching for the runaway Trish, she begins to unravel a sinister web of child pornography and corruption. Along the way, she encounters other supernaturals, including the shape-shifting Daniel Frey, who may or may not be involved in Trish's disappearance.

This was a fabulous story. I was riveted from the beginning. There were several subplots interwoven, which is something I enjoy. Anna is an engaging heroine. Strong, like her name, but compassionate and with a keen sense of justice. Other characters were portrayed well, including those that were likely only included in this story.

Favorite lines:
♦ Why do I feel as if we should be having this conversation on a moving staircase at Hogwarts, not here in a California classroom?
HP, ftw!
♦ By the time I've lost the pajamas, the only hard drive he seems interested in is the one between his legs.
Rowr!

Five stars!
