Meow or Never (Vanessa Abbot Mystery #3)Meow or Never by Nancy C. Davis

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I completed reading the ebook Meow or Never last night. It's the third installment in author Nancy C Davis' "Vanessa Abbot" mystery series, featuring crazy cat lady, Vanessa.

Vanessa is with Detective Pete Wheeler when he's called to an industrial accident. He takes Vanessa along, and they arrive at the scene of a fatality. It quickly becomes apparent that this was no accident. As Vanessa and Detective Pete wonder if the victim was the intended target, other incidents soon make it clear that an old nemesis is at work, and that they are on the hit list. They don't know whom they can trust, except for Vanessa's cats, who seem to sense the danger all around them. Will the cats be able to help bring a killer to justice?

Sigh

These stories are inane, for lack of a better word. There's no actual plot; rather, the narrative is just one random scene after another that culminates in a confrontation. Some scenarios are so implausible that I was left rolling my eyes. No police officer is going to take his girlfriend to a crime scene and ask if she wants to help investigate. A criminal mastermind with tentacles all over the country isn't going to waste his time on a small, po-dunk town in the middle of nowhere when there are bigger fish to fry in large cities. And, can we please stop referring to Vanessa's love interest as Detective Pete Wheeler? He's a detective; we get it. Introduce him as such and then refer to him as "Pete" throughout the rest of the book.

Favorite line: "I've got thirteen cats waiting for me who haven't been fed all day."
I can relate to that...

Appropriate reading for a tween. It lacks the sophistication and polish that is the hallmark of adult fare. Two stars.

Cats on the Prowl: Book OneCats on the Prowl: Book One by Nancy C. Davis

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Before lunch, I finished reading Cats on the Prowl 1 by Nancy C Davis. As you may have guessed, it's the first installment in the "Cats on the Prowl" mystery series. The main characters are two cats, Nat and Willow, who live at the police station. Nat considers himself a cat detective, and he decides it's time that Willow follows in his paw prints.

When a local bakery burns down with the owner inside, detectives Carl and Naya are on the case. What they don't know is that Nat is also on the case. He begins taking Willow with him as they question some of the alley cats, sit in on interrogations, and visit the homes of suspects. Willow is timid at first, but once she meets tiny alley cat, Bella, and sees how fearless she is, it gives Willow courage. She makes the rounds with Nat and learns the ropes, and she even sees some clues that he missed. Their sleuthing ability uncovers a conspiracy, and now Nat and Willow must point their humans in the right direction to solve the crime.

Cute and fluffy story but with no real substance. It's okay for a spot of mindless entertainment. I do enjoy stories about cats. One would think the author must love cats, as well, but if she thinks a week-old kitten (Bella) can fend for herself after her mother disappears, she has another think coming. Week-old kittens don't even have their eyes open yet, let alone have the capability to survive without their mother. Sigh.

Favorite line: He knew how to pace himself so every tin can with a piece of tuna fish sticking to it didn't send his heart fluttering.

I'm giving it three stars, and that's being generous.
