A Deadly Restoration (Julia Blake Murder Mystery, #2)A Deadly Restoration by Gillian Larkin

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I began an ebook novella last night and read it in under an hour. Hmm. Eh, it had chapters so I'm counting it. The book was A Deadly Restoration by Gillian Larkin, and it's the second in her "Julia Blake" cozy mystery series. The main character is Julia, who cleans houses for a living.

After Julia's elderly next-door neighbor sells her home, the new owner begins a massive renovation. The noise is maddening, as are the arguments that Leo, the owner, seems to get into on a regular basis. It's no surprise, therefore, when Julia goes next door to investigate a wide open door and discovers Leo dead. Soon DI Clarke is on the case, but so is Julia. It's a complete accident when she stumbles on the clue that leads to the identity of the killer.

Not only was this rather short, but it lacked any meaningful substance. The clue that broke the case was found in such serendipitous circumstances that it seemed to negate any investigating at all. Characterizations were okaaaaay, but Julia came across more as a nosy busybody than a competent, concerned neighbor. Eh.

Favorite line: There's something so sad about cutting healthy trees down.

I can't justify scoring this any higher than two.

Virtually Scared To Death (Julia Blake Murder Mysteries, #1)Virtually Scared To Death by Gillian Larkin

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I began reading a novella last night and, due to its brevity, I was able to finish it in one evening. It was Virtually Scared to Death by Gillian Larkin, and it's the first book in the "Julia Blake" cozy mystery series. The narrative is in first-person pov of the main character, Julia, who owns a cleaning business.

Julia is shocked to discover one of her clients, Mark Castle, dead on the floor of his apartment. The last time she saw him, he was working on a new computer game, and he said some odd things before arguing with a business partner. Julia begins to suspect foul play, especially considering the bottle of pills next to Mark's body were different than what she normally saw in his home. Although she shares her concerns with the detective inspector on the case, Julia soon learns she's a suspect, herself. It's up to her to clear her name and help bring a killer to justice.

This was shorter than I had anticipated, and it was basic and bland. If you wanted to introduce your tweens to cozy mysteries, this would be a good story to start them with. There wasn't anything wrong with it; it simply lacked substance and sophistication.

Favorite line: "Lower your lemon juice. We'll take over from here."

A Ghost In The Garden (Ruby And Nessa - Ghost Hunters #3)A Ghost In The Garden by Gillian Larkin

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Last night, I read the ebook (e-novella?) A Ghost in the Garden, which is the third part of Gillian Larkin's "Ruby and Nessa" series. The stories follow the adventures of sisters Ruby and Nessa as they investigate hauntings.

Ruby and Nessa are asked to look into an allegedly haunted apartment building. No one has been staying in one particular apartment for more than a few months, and the manager wants to know why. Ruby quickly spots the ghost of a young girl peering at her through a window, but she finds herself drawn more to the garden. During the course of the investigation, the sisters soon learn that they have not one, but two ghosts who need their help to move on. One of the spirits, however, is not so ready to go.

The story was supremely uncomplicated, and matters were resolved with very little drama or conflict. While I might have preferred something with more substance, this was ideal for an evening read, especially right before bedtime. Despite the brevity of the book, things progressed in an orderly fashion, and there was a nifty surprise or two.

Favorite line: "Are you saying the owners forgot to pack their ghost and take it with them?"

Nothing remarkable about this book--average score of three.

A Ghost In The Pub (Ruby And Nessa - Ghost Hunters #2)A Ghost In The Pub by Gillian Larkin

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

Last night, I read an ebook novella, A Ghost in the Pub by Gillian Larkin. It's the second part of the "Ruby and Nessa" series, featuring sisters and ghost hunters, Ruby and Nessa. Story is told in third person point of view, from Ruby's view. This was a short story, but it was chaptered; therefore, I'm counting it!

Ruby and Nessa are called to investigate strange happenings at a local pub. A disgusting smell is becoming more and more prevalent, and bottles have been upended. The owner is losing business as a result, and he's desperate for help. Ruby and Nessa soon discover that the pub is haunted by the spirit of an evil man. When Nessa does a sketch of him, locals claim it's Shifty Sid Simmons, a small-time crook who hasn't been seen in decades. The question is, why is he haunting the Red Lion Pub?

The story was interesting, although it was a bit too short to really get into it. Ruby and Nessa's investigation proceeded in an orderly fashion, but I felt that the climax was quite anticlimactic. Nevertheless, it was entertaining for a brief read.

Favorite line: "I bet it stinks of old people and cabbage. And wee."

I read an ebook novella last night, A Ghost in the Store, by Gillian Larkin. It's the first installment in her "Ruby & Nessa" ghost hunters series. It was short enough that it almost feels like a cheat to include it here, but hey, it was chaptered. Ha ha!

The story opens with Ruby dragging her younger sister Nessa along with her on an investigation in a grocery store. It's reputed to be haunted, and Ruby and Nessa do see the ghost of a young woman there. After doing some research, they learn the store was built on the site where a home for unwed mothers once stood. They go on to check church records and learn the woman's identity and her tragic story. From there, it's a matter of helping Mary cross over, but Mary has some unfinished business.

Nothing exrtaordinary about the story. It was a cute, light, fun read. Editing was good; characterizations were two-dimensional, but that may change as the series progresses. There is some friction between the sisters, which seemed to have been resolved too easily, but oh well. One thing that bothered me is that Nessa twice made a crack to Ruby about coloring her hair to get rid of the gray, and then we learn that Ruby is only 28. WTF?

Favorite line: "...she's always been two pork chops short of a barbecue."

Okay story, three hearts:

Over the course of two evenings, I read Death Takes a Trip, by Gillian Larkin. It was an ebook, a novella, and the fifth installment in the author's "Julia Blake Cozy Mystery" series. The author did a good job of not making me feel like I was missing anything by starting in the middle of the series.

Julia Blake cleans houses for a living, with her assistant Cain. One of her favorite clients is an older gentleman named Douglas Pedley. He has been mourning his wife, but has recently met a new woman. Julia and Cain are immediately taken with Nina, and they couldn't be happier for Douglas. Julia soon learns that a local real estate developer has been pressuring Douglas to sell his house, and the developer has resorted to underhanded tactics. The police don't take Julia's suspicions seriously, until Douglas is found dead at the bottom of his stairs. It soon becomes clear this was no accident.

This was a cute, cozy mystery. The writing lacked sophistication, but it was nice to read something that didn't get bogged down in wordiness. I believe this was a freebie on Amazon. While it was an entertaining read, I don't think I'll make an effort to read more in the series unless they're free. There are too many other cozies out there that I find more interesting.

Three out of five:
