Yesterday, I brought my work book home, and I finished reading it last night. The book was The Ming and I by Tamar Myers. It's part of the author's "Den of Antiquity" cozy mystery series. I keep being intrigued by the covers of these books, as they always feature a cat. While the main character did have a cat, he didn't factor into the story much until the end.
Abigail Timberlake owns an antique shop, Den of Antiquity. When a woman is struck by a vehicle outside of her shop and catapulted through Abigail's window, she finds herself catapulted into the investigation of the woman's death. The police initially think it's a case of hit and run, but then Abigail begins receiving threatening phone calls after she finds a Ming vase among her inventory that she swears was not there before. When a woman is shot dead right in front of her, Abigail begins to fear the bullet may have been meant for her.
The story was peppered with lively southern characters, and I didn't guess who the culprit was at all. While the story was cute, I found Abigail a bit off-putting. She was self-absorbed, and I didn't really connect with her. Abigail's mother was a tad annoying, and I actually liked some of the secondary characters better than I liked the mc.
Three diamonds for an average read:
