I brought my work book home, since it was almost finished, and now it is! It was Shadow's Kiss, a historical/paranormal story by Joan Hohl.

The story featured two, converging plot lines. The main plot centered around genteel Darcy Flynn, who must travel to the rough town of Denver after her mother's passing. There, she encounters the enigmatic Jonathan Stuart, who died several days before Darcy's arrival. Yes, Jonathan is a ghost. Darcy is more shocked that her mother was running a brothel, and she takes steps to turn it into a private school for girls.

In the meantime, US Marshal Wade Dunstan is on the trail of the four men who murdered his wife. Along the way, he rescues a young girl and takes her under his wing until he can find a suitable place for her.

Darcy and Jonathan's story, while it had its interesting moments, was almost too trite. They fell in love in a matter of mere weeks, lamenting their inability to truly be together. On the other hand, Dunstan's story is much rougher and brutal. There is a strong theme of sexual abuse going on, and I would not have read this book had I known that. The author didn't merely mention it in passing, and I found it uncomfortable at times. In addition, it was so obvious where the author was going with the story that it took a lot of fun out of it.

Average story, average rating:

★★★
