Book 20, 2014
Mar. 9th, 2014 02:03 pmLate Wednesday night, I completed Secondhand Spirits by Juliet Blackwell. It's the first book in her "Witchcraft Mystery" series.
The story centered around witch Lily Ivory, who has recently moved to San Francisco and opened a vintage clothing shop called Aunt Cora's Closet. Although Lily tries to keep her nature a secret, other witches in the area are able to discern her identity. Aidan, a powerful male witch, gifts her with a familiar. Oscar is a goblin who often assumes the form of a potbellied pig to blend in.
When a client of Lily's is murdered the same night that a child in the area disappears, Lily launches her own investigation. She's always been a solo practitioner, but Lily soon discovers she's going to need all the help she can get to solve the murder and return the child to her parents.
What fascinated me the most about this book was that it had to do with a Spanish spirit known as La Llorana. I had never heard of that particular spirit until the last book I read, which also mentioned her. That was bizarre.
This was a very good book, very engrossing, and I enjoyed the characterizations. I have at least two more in the series, and I am eager to read them.
Four stars:
★★★★
