Book 39, 2014
Jun. 24th, 2014 10:14 pmAs soon as I got home tonight, I flopped on the couch and finished reading Dead on the Delta by Stacey Jay. I had a difficult time putting it down last night, but I needed to go to bed. Ha ha!
This is the first story in the author's "Annabelle Lee" series.
Fairies used to be the stuff of legend, until a horrible mutation brought them into the limelight. They now feed on human blood, and their venom is poisonous. Only 5% of the population is immune, and Annabelle is one such person. As a result, she is able to move freely outside of the iron that encloses her hometown.
When Annabelle is tasked with retrieving a body that has been dumped outside of the gates, she is inadvertently drawn into the investigation of the little girl's murder. In the meantime, she's trying to juggle her rocky relationship with her boyfriend, deal with the return of her ex-boyfriend, investigate a drug house in her territory, and try to explain to herself how she was attacked by an invisible man.
Quite a lot was going on in the book, with Annabelle's personal and professional life in upheaval, a plethora of suspects, and her own addictions. Annabelle is so flawed and real that it's impossible not to cheer for her.
This was a marvelous, clever, inventive book. There's at least one more in the series, and I was pleased to discover I had it on my bookshelf. Why the two weren't together is a mystery...Hah!
