I cleaned house today then finished my latest ebook - Along Came a Demon by Linda Welch. It’s the first in the author’s “Whisperings” series of urban fantasy. The main character is Tiffany “Tiff” Banks, a reluctant psychic who assists the local PD.

As a girl, Tiff realized she could see and speak to the dead. She learned that murder victims always remember the faces of their killers. Always. As a result, Tiff lends her talent to the local police department. They think she’s psychic; she doesn’t dare tell the truth about her ability to truly communicate with the dead. In addition to her ability, Tiff is also able to see the otherwordly creatures that live among us. To everyone else, they appear human. To Tiff, they look demonic. For that reason, she refers to them as demons. When a woman dies in the apartments behind Tiff’s house, she comes to Tiff for help. That shouldn’t be possible; the dead are tied to the place where they passed. Lindy doesn’t think she was murdered; what she wants help with is locating her son. Tiff agrees to help. The problem is, no one remembers that Lindy even had a son. Tiff won’t give up, however, and when she’s attacked by demons she knows she’s on the right path. Once the police begin to take her claims of a missing son seriously, she’s assigned to work with a partner. The problem is, Tiff can’t tell them that they’ve paired her with a demon.

I enjoyed this story. Very fast-paced. Tiff is tough and competent, although she’s out of her depths dealing with demons. She’s also unsure if her partner is truly there to help find the boy or if he intends to hinder her search. Whether or not she likes him, Tiff has little choice but to trust him. Characters were portrayed well, and the plot pelted along smoothly.

Very good, and I’d like to read more in the series. Four stars.
