Book 19, 2014
Mar. 4th, 2014 07:29 pmAt work today, I finished reading Dawn's Awakening by Lora Leigh. It's part of her Breeds series, although it's the first one I've read.
I'm on the fence about this one. On one hand, the story was fast-paced and exciting, but on the other...wow, can we say TRIGGER WARNINGS?! I've never experienced anything that would have been triggered by this book, but parts of it still left me feeling anxious and unnerved.
The story centers around Dawn, who is a Cougar Breed. The Breeds have been created in a lab, using human and animal DNA. The males are trained as warriors, while the females are...mistreated. The story did not describe any abuse/assault in the present time, but Dawn's flashbacks were enough to give me that fluttery, slightly ill feeling in my stomach. I can't imagine how it may have affected someone who'd had a similar experience to hers.
Dawn's mate is Seth, who is a large financial backer for the Breeds as they try to establish themselves outside of the labs they've escaped. Seth knows of Dawn's past and tries to avoid her, for fear his attentions will be too traumatic for her. Dawn has been content to keep him at arm's length until she learns he plans to marry another woman. At the same time, Seth is targeted for assassination, and Dawn is one of the Breeds assigned to protect him.
When Dawn and Seth finally get down and dirty, the sex scenes are very hot and erotic, and the action scenes literally made my heart pound. Still, I can't shake the sense of unease the story left me with. I have several more books in this series. I'm not going to pick another one up for awhile.
Three stars:
