Last night, I finished reading Deadtown by Nancy Holzner. It's an urban fantasy featuring heroine Victory (Vicky) Vaughn.
Vicky is a shapeshifter, which is a rarity in the world of paranormals. In the story, werewolves, zombies, vampires, etc are known as PAs (Paranormal Americans), and they are engaged in a political battle to gain the same rights as normal humans ("norms"). And, that's just the background of the book.
There was so much going on in this book. The way PAs were treated by mainstream Americans was atrocious. In Boston, they're forced to live in a small, designated area known as Deadtown. Vicky's boyfriend, werewolf-slash-attorney Alexander Kane, is heavily involved in the politics, while Vicky's own family are drawn into the drama when a fanatic geneticist kidnaps Vicky's niece for testing. In the meantime, Vicky is engaged in battle with the demon who killed her father, and she must thwart an attack on Boston.
The book was quite intriguing, and I hope it was just the first in a series. I'll need to look for others by the same author. This one gets four stars.
★★★★

Date: 2014-01-25 07:05 am (UTC)I meant to comment when you posted about Faith Hunter's book - have you read the Neomage trilogy by her? Bloodring/Seraph/Host? I think it's infinitely better than the Jane Yellowrock books.

Date: 2014-01-26 05:42 am (UTC)As for Faith Hunter, the Jane Yellowrock book is the first of hers I've read. I think. Hee! I know I have at least one more of the Jane Yellowrock books. I will look into her other series, too. I've always bought books faster than I can read them, which is why I'm only now "discovering" books I've owned for years.
Oh, and I recently bought a Kindle Fire! I'm sort of excited, sort of scared. I'm technologically impaired at the best of times. I'd like to have my wee!brother help me get it set up, but driving around here has been atrocious. Not sure when he'll make it out this way again.

Date: 2014-01-26 06:09 pm (UTC)Tell me about it, I think I have over a hundred books on my to read list that are on my kindle and waiting for me!
Speaking of, I would love to help you, but I don't have a Fire, just the old Keyboard. One of my friends got a Paperwhite for Christmas, though, and I helped her set that up; most of Amazon's gadgets seem to be pretty intuitive and easy to use, so hopefully you'll manage okay!
Let me know, btw, if you'd like some ebooks! I have a huge collection and I'm constantly sharing with people.
