Scone with the Wind (Baker's Dozen Paranormal Cozy #1)Scone with the Wind by L.E. Gordon

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

While on vacation, I read an ebook to pass the time. It was Scone with the Wind by L E Gordon, and it's the first in the "Baker's Dozen" cozy mystery series. Main character is Kitty Anderson, divorced, mother of two teen boys, and a kitchen witch.

After her divorce, Kitty decided to follow her dream and open a bakery. Her endeavor has been successful, which is a source of pride for Kitty. When one of her regulars fails to show up, she takes some baked goods to his home, thinking perhaps he's not feeling well. When Kitty arrives, she finds Malcolm dead at his kitchen table. His death is considered due to natural causes. Later, Malcolm's nephew, David, comes to town to settle his uncle's estate. He and Kitty hit it off and begin seeing one another. During one of their conversations about Malcolm, Kitty is struck by the fact that she noticed something odd in Malcolm's kitchen. Convinced now that his death was the result of foul play, Kitty and David begin asking questions of Malcolm's neighbors and acquaintances. Kitty uses her magical prowess to aid their investigation. She only hopes they will find something concrete to take to the police, lest someone get away with murder.

Cute cozy. Characters were done well. Pacing was steady, and the plot was engaging. I appreciated the slow burn of Kitty's romance with David. There were some editing issues, most notably the fact that the 2 or 3 times the name of Kitty's town was mentioned, it came through formatted as "XXXX".

Favorite line: "You had better go inside now, or I'll be responsible for a riot when there are no fresh scones in the morning."

Again, cute and fun but not remarkable. Average score.
