chez_jaeOn Wednesday, I finished reading Dhampir by Barb & JC Hendee. I hadn't read any sci-fi/fantasy in awhile, and I was due.
In the story, Magiere pretends to be a vampire hunter with the help of her half-elf partner Leesil. Magiere preys on the superstitions of simple villagers to fleece them of their money. However, she is tired of the game and wants to quit the farce and settle down to run the pub she has purchased with her ill-gotten gains.
The town that Magiere chooses is home to actual vampires. They sense a hunter in their midst and seek to destroy her before she can kill them. What Magiere doesn't realize is that she is a dhampir...half-human and half-vampire, and that her kind are born to hunt vampires. She doesn't understand at first why she is being targeted by strangers, nor how she instinctively knows how to fight them.
The story was quite engrossing, from Magiere's sketchy beginnings to her transformation into a true hunter. It appeared to be the beginning of a series, so I'll need to watch for more of this.
