My twenty-fifth book of the year also happened to be the first-ever Kindle book I read.

*blows horn and throws confetti*

My office is closed today for Good Friday, so I stayed up late last night to finish reading Fashionably Dead by Robyn Peterman. This is the first installment in her Hot Damned series.

The story centered around Astrid and is told from her pov. She's recently lost her beloved grandmother, is still trying to prove her worth to her aloof mother, and she wants to quit smoking. When Astrid decides to try hypnosis to kick the habit, she ends up getting turned into a Vampyre instead.

Now, Astrid has to learn how to live her undead life, while various Houses vie for her to join them. It's like a Vampyre sorority rush! Astrid is helped by a wise-cracking, foul-mouthed angel who looks just like Oprah, and a fairy who calls himself The Kevin. Astrid joins House Cressida when one of the other Vampyres wins her over with a goodie basket of Prada. Astrid finds herself making new friends, new enemies, drawing the attraction of the Prince, and learning more about her own heritage.

I must say, Astrid was a total Mary Sue, in that she was fabulously beautiful (all the Vampyres were), extremely powerful, the guys all wanted her, and she was the prophesied Chosen One. However, it was impossible not to like her. Astrid had her flaws and foibles, and she was constantly doubting herself. She was kind and loyal to her friends and determined to do the right thing, even at a cost to herself.

The story was a light and fun, funny read, but there was enough actual gore in the fight scenes and enough angst to keep it from being a fluff fest. It ended on a cliffhanger, and I was sufficiently engaged enough to want to read the next book in the series.

I give it four stars!

★★★★

As mentioned, this was the first ebook I've ever read. It was fun in a way, but I found I missed the ability to pick up my book and see at a glance how much progress I've made in reading it and how much farther I have to go. Granted, there was fine print at the bottom of each "page" that indicated estimated time left in the book, but it wasn't the same. Nevertheless, I've loaded other books onto my Kindle, and I am looking forward to reading them. I think I'll choose a "real" book to read next, however.
