Just finished reading Some Like It Witch by Heather Blake. It's part of the "Wishcraft" mystery series, featuring Wishcrafter Darcy Merriweather.
The entire village is on tenterhooks when the old Tavistock comes up for sale. It was once at the epicenter of a major diamond heist, and local legend has it that the diamonds are still hidden in the house. When Darcy's friend, Cherise, takes an interest in the house, she agrees to accompany her to view it. Unfortunately, they come across the body of the realtor, Raina Gallagher. The village Elder tasks Darcy with looking into the murder, while her boyfriend, Nick, investigates from the police angle. Finding out who dunnit won't be easy, because there are a plethora of suspects, from the victim's morbidly jovial spouse to a rival realtor to the Gemcrafter that Darcy privately calls "Mr Creepy".
In addition to investigating a murder, Darcy is also assisting her Aunt Velma with the upcoming council election, trying to help her friend Evan find employees and a love life, figure out who the Elder is, and avoid her mortal enemy, Glinda.
Whew! Lots going on, but it kept the story moving. Mild complaint is that the author dropped all manner of red herring clues, but gave no chance to guess at the real killer until the very end. However, I have figured out who the Elder is. Neener, neener.
Favorite line: Ah, the magic of books. The kind of magic that had nothing to do with witches or spells or charms. And was perhaps even more powerful.
Great characterizations and excellent story. Five stars!
