Last night, I took the time to read an ebook novella. The book was Desired: Black Creek Pack Book 1 by Sakura Skye.

The story revolves around Leon Techer and Ryder Reems. Ryder's father is the Alpha of the Black Creek Pack, while Leon has taken over his family's business after the death of his own father. The Techers have traditionally supported the Reems family, thus strengthening the pack as a whole. Leon is running himself ragged trying to keep up with all of his responsibilities, while Ryder seems to skate through life as the scion of the Alpha. When the two of them must travel for a pack matter, they end up drinking too much and spending the night together.

In the morning, Leon doesn't really remember what happened, but Ryder can't forget it. For that reason, he begins spending more time with Leon, gradually healing childhood hurts and growing closer. Leon is grateful for the extra help, but he knows he needs to avoid getting too close to Ryder. It's bad enough that Leon has Alpha genes and could take over the pack, he doesn't need to involve Ryder. However, Leon's hand is forced when he draws on his own Alpha power to bring some young wolves into line. Now the Alpha is anxious to bring Leon into the family, rather than surrender his family's power to the powerful young Alpha. He dangles his daughters in front of Leon, but Leon wants no part of leadership. It isn't until Ryder comes to him again, and the two of them are caught in the act that Leon must make a decision.

Premise was good, execution fell flat. The backstory provided was sketchy at best, and at worst, it just fell flat and confused things. This was a short story; the author shouldn't have tried so hard to provide a backstory. SPaG was actually good, but the author's overuse of the word "male" any time she referenced either character by anything but his name was distracting and frustrating. Switching pov's didn't help. Sex scenes were lackluster and sounded painful, quite frankly.

Favorite line: It was like finding out that your best friend was the Second Coming of Christ...except they weren't friends, and Jesus didn't want the job.

In a word, disappointing. Giving it two stars:
