Book 21, 2016
Mar. 13th, 2016 12:08 pmI just polished off Inconvenient Murder, which is the first in author Amanda A Allen's "Inept Witches" mystery series. It was also an ebook.
The story revolves around BFFs Emily and Ingrid. They are spoiled, wealthy and lazy. Ingrid inherited money when her older husband died, while Emily is in the midst of a messy divorce. Emily has inherited an old building, which contains a bookshop on the ground floor and apartments above. It is where she and Ingrid are currently living. They are witches, but neither uses her magic for anything serious. Emily hasn't used hers at all, while Ingrid only casts spells to make her high heels more comfortable, brew perfect coffee, etc.
When Ingrid stumbles over the dead body of Emily's soon-to-be-ex-husband, they are caught up in the murder investigation. In the meantime, Ingrid is falling for the local sheriff, and Emily is left to deal with her in-laws. The two of them decide the best way to return to their lazy lives is to solve the murder themselves. To that end, they try their hand at magic again, steal and use truth serum potion, and bitch about the situation.
I'm on the fence about this one. The story was light and funny. Ingrid and Emily could be amusing, but it was like Sabrina the Teenage Witch meets Mean Girls meets the Kardashians, or something. There were editing issues--nothing too serious, but certainly annoying. Also, I felt like I was reading the second or third book of the series. There is not much backstory to let the reader know how things got to this point. Irritating! Their language and verbage was vexing, too. Anyone whom Ingrid and Emily didn't like was blithely called a whore, while Ingrid called everyone some variation of "dove": cow-dove, cold dove, favorite dove, etc. That left me rolling my eyes.
Favorite line: "I can't believe you ever had sex with him. You should go boil your privates."
Three out of five:
