Book 24, 2014
Apr. 4th, 2014 07:24 pmLast night, I finished reading Wicked Game by Jeri Smith-Ready. It's the first book in her urban fantasy series featuring former con-artist Ciara Griffin.
Trying to leave her life of cons behind her, Ciara is going to college, and she lands a job as the marketing intern at a local radio station. When the manager of the station tells her all of the DJs are vampires who are stuck in the eras they were turned, Ciara thinks he's joking. She soon finds out it's the truth. Ciara also learns the station may be sold to a large conglomerate, and if that happens, the vampires, who live and work at the station, will fade away. Ciara decides to "out" the DJs by kicking off a marketing campaign that claims the DJs are vampires, and the radio's call sign is changed to WVMP--"The Lifeblood of Rock and Roll". However, other vampires are angered, fearing that humans will realize the truth behind the ruse.
Ciara begins to fall for Shane, one of the vampires, while struggling to keep the station from being sold. To save WVMP, Ciara must call on all of her skills as a con to pull off the ultimate scam.
I liked this book. While most of the vampire tropes were familiar, the author introduced enough new wrinkles to make her vamps unique. I enjoyed the fact that Ciara often struggled to not fall back into her old habits, all while justifying the cons she did pull because it was for the good of the station and her new friends. I have at least two more books in this series, and I'm eager to read them.
