The Fast and the Furriest by Sofie RyanMy rating: 5 of 5 stars
Stayed up a tad late last night to finish reading The Fast and the Furriest by Sofie Ryan. It's part of the "Second Chance Cat" mystery series, featuring Sarah Grayson, owner of the Second Chance shop, and her rescue cat, Elvis.
Sarah's employee and friend, Mac, has always been a private person, but even she is surprised when a woman comes looking for him, claiming to be a friend of Mac's wife. Sarah relays the message to Mac, but before he can track her down, Erin Fellowes is murdered. Mac immediately becomes the primary suspect, especially when Sarah's friend, Nick, claims to have witnessed him speaking to Erin before her death.
Sarah is convinced that Mac is innocent. Soon, Charlotte's Angels, the geriatric detective agency that operates out of Second Chance, is on the case. With elderly Mr P's hacking skills and the interviewing/interrogation savvy of Liz, Rose, and Charlotte, the Angels begin turning up clues and unearthing leads that the police haven't sussed out yet. Logic says to "follow the money" in a murder case, but this may be something else entirely. It's up to Sarah and the Angels, with help from Elvis, to find out.
A cute and charming mystery, just what a cozy should be. I thought I knew who the killer was, but then other, better suspects came along to keep me guessing. Characterizations are done very well, and I appreciate reading about Sarah's day to day life, not just her sleuthing. I think it's important for authors to portray their characters as regular people who have jobs to go to, homes to keep up, socializing to do, etc.
Favorite line: "Never turn down a chocolate chip cookie or a chance to pee."
Very good, five stars!
