chez_jaeYou can tell December is kicking my assets when it takes me so long to read another book. Guh.
Thursday night, I finished The Cat, the Sneak, and the Secret by Leann Sweeney, which is part of the "Cats in Trouble" mystery series.
Jillian Hart is busy preparing to marry Tom Stewart, but she has time to take Tom's stepson, Finn, to a local animal shelter to adopt a calico cat he wants. When they arrive, the cat, a notorious Houdini, is missing. She turns up at a neighbor's, hiding in a reclaimed love seat and bearing a locket she filched. Jillian notices that there appears to be blood on the love seat, and she contacts Candace, her friend on the police force.
In the meantime, a body is discovered at a construction site, the victim's daughter goes missing, and his two wives (one current, one ex) seem to be closing ranks in their mutual grief. When another murder takes place, this time of a prominent local official, the pressure is on to solve the crimes before anyone else is hurt.
Jillian finds herself with a houseful, as she takes in Finn's new cat, as well as the distraught daughter of the first victim. She learns things via the town grapevine while she's out and about, and these things Jillian faithfully relays to the police. However, her meddling may have placed her in danger.
Very good book, although not my favorite in the series. I thought I had things figured out, but there were some nifty twists and turns. One thing that annoyed me is that, once again, the climax takes place at Jillian's house. How many times can an armed and dangerous individual show up at this woman's house? Authors need to realize that resolutions to murder mysteries don't have to place their characters in mortal danger each time. It can be exciting, yes, but it eventually gets old.
