Early on Thanksgiving day, I finished reading Fire and Ice Cream by KM Carroll. It's the first part of the author's "Draconic Mysteries" series.

Tianna Tokala is an ice drake--a human who can transform into a small dragon. She's starting over in Carefree, AZ, working at an ice cream parlor after a nasty accident and an even nastier divorce. Just a week into her employment there, Tianna's boss, an actual dragon lady, is found dead with a bowl of Tianna's Rocky Road ice cream next to her. Because dragons and drakes historically don't get along, Tianna finds herself at the middle of a murder investigation. Determined to clear her name, she starts her own investigation. Along the way, Tianna meets another drake named Bruce, a slayer named Jennifer, her boss's fiance, as well as the woman's ex-husband. Each of them may have had a reason for murder, and it's up to Tianna to put the pieces together.

Hm. On the fence about this one. Tianna was likable enough, but she was so timid and wishy-washy that it was off-putting. The author mentioned the particulars of Tianna's divorce often enough that I presumed it was a plot point, but...it wasn't. Another thing that bothered me was that Tianna often complained about working at a minimum wage job, yet she was always eating out. How can she afford that on such a limited salary?! I also had trouble wrapping my mind around the fact that it seemed to be a given that dragons would kill drakes when they encountered them. Uh, isn't that outright murder? But, it was like everyone just shrugged it off. That didn't sit well with me. In short, the premise was okay, but the execution fell flat.

Favorite line: ...it's hard to panic while drinking a tangy, sweet raspberry smoothie that is so cold that it gives you a headache...

Uninspiring--two stars:
