This evening, I finished reading The Goodbye Witch by Heather Blake. It's part of her "Wishcraft Mystery" series, featuring Wishcrafter Darcy Merriweather.
Darcy is worried when her best friend and fellow witch, Starla, claims that her abusive ex-husband, Kyle, is stalking her. Having been indicted for attempted murder, Kyle has been a fugitive from justice since he escaped from prison two years before. The problem is, only Starla can see Kyle. Darcy knows her friend isn't imagining things, so she enlists the aid of the other crafters, along with several familiars, to investigate. Things take a turn for the worse when Kyle is found in Starla's home, dead as a door nail. Now, it's not just a matter of protecting Starla, but proving she didn't kill her ex-husband.
The story had a lot going on. Darcy is dreading her upcoming birthday because it makes her miss her mother even more. An elderly friend of hers seems to be in failing health, others in the community are acting weird, Starla's current boyfriend, Vince, has too much under surveillance, Darcy keeps running afoul of police officer Glinda, who is jealous of Darcy's romance with police officer Nick, and something seems off with Kyle's entire family. It's a lot for one witch to handle, but Darcy has help, not only from friends and familiars, but also from the Elder--an anonymous, wise witch who guides the crafters in the community and metes out punishment when necessary.
I sussed out the villain long before either Darcy or Nick did, and other things I've been anticipating have come to pass. Now, let's see if Darcy's Aunt Ve turns out to be the Elder, and if the mourning dove Darcy kept hearing turns out to be Kyle.
:D
Favorite line: I'd never realized the happiness that could be found if I just opened my heart to it.
Wonderful story, even though it wasn't as light as others in the series. There was more angst in this one, but it gave the story depth. Five stars:
