To illustrate how crazy-busy my weekend has been, I'm reviewing a book I finished reading on Wednesday night. Guh.
It was Bad to the Bone, by Jeri Smith-Ready. This is the second book in the author's "WVMP" series, which features (former) con-artist Ciara Griffin and the DJs she works with at WVMP. The DJs are all vampires, including Ciara's boyfriend Shane. The station plays up the vampire aspect as a marketing gimmick, but in such a manner as to come across as, hello, gimmicky. Very few people know that the DJs are actual vampires.
One faction that does know vamps exist is Family Action Network. When FAN starts preempting WVMP's broadcasts with religious messages of fire and brimstone, it's up to Ciara and her friends to track down the transmission. They find the broadcast tower guarded by a canine vampire, but when Ciara unchains him, she suddenly has a friend for life. One discovery leads to another, and Ciara finds herself uncovering more and more layers, each more treacherous and dangerous than the last.
To make matters worse, Ciara's relationships with both Shane and her father are complicated, and now she finds herself strangely drawn to David, the very human manager of WVMP.
Lots of action in the book, and Ciara gets to utilize her skills as a con-artist in an effort to learn more about FAN and the more sinister group behind them.
Favorite lines:
"Billy Idol meets Harry Potter. I like it."
"These assholes could at least threaten us with proper grammar."
"We're all a little queer for vampires."
"Maybe he got decockinated in a tragic vamp-fucking accident."
Four of five:
****
