Earlier this evening, I completed the book Threadbare Gypsy Souls by TA Chase. I've read and enjoyed other books by this author, but this was not her best effort.

The premise was interesting: Nash Rhodes is leaving his life in a biker gang behind and traveling from TN to CA to visit his mother. Along the way, he makes a stop in the small town of Fallen Creek WY. When he defends the owner of the local bar from one of her employees, Nash is drawn into small town politics and intrigue.

Cullen O'Murphy has lived on a ranch outside of Fallen Creek for four years, which is a record for him. He's a lone wolf (literally!) who tends to move around. Cullen avoids the local pack of shifters as much as possible, even though he's clearly an alpha who could take the pack over.

When Nash and Cullen meet, sparks fly.

Hot, yeah? Well, it was, but there were so many inconsistencies in the story that I just couldn't enjoy it as much as I had hoped to.

First of all, when we initially meet Cullen, he's recently run afoul of some of the pack who beat him up. Later in the book, the author states that all of the other shifters in the area, aside from the bad!alpha, all fear Cullen and act submissive in his presence. Bzuh?!

Second, we learn that Nash is half-shifter, or so he believes, yet he is completely baffled by some of the things he witnesses in town, such as Cullen single-handedly pummeling some of the shifters while he's in human form. It seemed as if the author changed her mind mid-story to make Nash a paranormal, too. That's fine, but at least go back and drop us some hints. Instead, Nash came across as completely clueless, and then...he wasn't. Bzuh?!

Third, when the inevitable showdown happened between Cullen and bad!alpha, it happened off-screen! Bzuh?!

Finally, most of the secondary characters were completely okay with Nash and Cullen's relationship. That's awesome, but not exactly realistic. Whatever.

The budding relationship between Nash and Cullen was entertaining, and the sex scenes were yummy. I wish I could have enjoyed the book more, but too many things occurred to throw me out of it.

Three stars:

★★★

Especially in Wyoming.

I've never been to WY, but I imagine that would be true of most places.

Realistically, you can expect some people to be fine with it, others to be aghast and disgusted, and most everyone else to be ambivalent. In this story, only one or two "bad guys" had a problem with the relationship.

*shakes head*
