On...Monday night, it was, I finished reading The Dead Files by Mary Bowers. It’s the 17th book in her “Tropical Breeze” series of cozy mysteries with a paranormal twist. The main character is Taylor Verone.
Small towns can harbor big secrets, which Taylor discovers when a prominent local attorney and his wife are murdered in their home at the edge of Taylor’s property. Todd Bellamy was a known womanizer, and his wife, Whitney, was known to look the other way. Still, the police are looking into Todd’s love life for a killer, and Taylor gets sucked into the drama via the local gossip. Not only that, but her significant other, Michael, steps out of retirement and into the law firm to help out until Todd’s partner can replace him. The police chief has asked Taylor to impart any relevant information she may glean. One thing she refuses to tell him about is the vision she has, thanks to her cat, Bastet. However, it does provide some pertinent clues and leads Taylor to speak to the Bellamys’ neighbor, Jody, who may have seen something that night.
The story was interesting, but I miss the early books in the series, in which the paranormal element featured more prominently. At least this one focused on Taylor as the main character instead of having her be a secondary character. As a reader, this was a tough nut to crack; I didn’t know who dunnit until Taylor revealed what she’d deduced. The plot was engaging, and characters came across as three-dimensional. I wish Edson would have made an appearance.
Favorite lines:
♦ Isn’t it odd how you can be strong for somebody else when you can’t be strong for yourself?
♦ The meanest the streets of Tropical Breeze ever get is when too many kids want to be Darth Vader in the Halloween parade.
Very good, four stars
