chez_jaeOn Thursday, I brought home the book I was reading at work and finished it. The book was Nightwalker by Jocelynn Drake, and it's the first in her "Dark Days" series.
Mira is a 600-year old vampire living in Savannah, GA. She is an enforcer among her kind, eliminating vampires who kill humans. Mira has a unique ability in her arsenal; she can start fires. When she encounters a hunter named Danaus, Mira becomes the hunted. The two square off in a bloody battle, but they learn they have bigger problems than one another.
Elementals, known as the naturi, are trying to return to the earthly plane. If they succeed, they will destroy all vampires and humans alike. Mira and Danaus are compelled to join forces in the battle against the naturi. For Mira, the journey will reveal secrets of her past, as well as her creation, leaving her wondering just whom she can trust.
It took awhile for me to get engrossed in the story, but it certainly picked up steam by the end. One thing I appreciated was that, despite the fact that Mira found Danaus attractive, she never lost her desire to destroy him. What a refreshing change from other female leads, who seem to lose their focus when confronted with an attractive male! I have other books in the series, and I am curious to see where the story will lead.
