Furbidden Fatality (A Catskills Pet Rescue Mystery #1)Furbidden Fatality by Deborah Blake

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I finished reading Furbidden Fatality last night. It's the first book in the "Catskills Pet Rescue" mystery series by author Deborah Blake. The primary character is Kari Stuart, and the story is told in her first-person perspective.

Kari is a hard-working waitress who is getting by, but her life is going nowhere...that is, until she wins $5 million in the lottery. Unsure what she plans to do with the money, the decision is all but taken from her when she rescues a stray kitten and takes it to the shelter. There, Kari discovers the shelter is in need of repair and is dangerously close to closing due to lack of funding. On impulse, she buys the shelter and begins renovations. Along with the buildings, ground, and animals, Kari has also gained the enmity of the local animal warden, who claims that one of her shelter dogs is dangerous. When she stumbles across the man's dead body on shelter property, Kari becomes a person of interest in Myers' murder. As if that wasn't enough to deal with, someone has taken to vandalizing the shelter, which just makes Kari all the more determined to find out who really killed the warden.

An enjoyable story. The characterizations were good, including the inevitable jackasses. I was on the verge of murdering some of them, myself. LOL! Just when I thought I had things figured out, new twists were introduced, making for an interesting, engrossing read.

Favorite line: Old farmhouses had character, even if they weren't perfect.

Lively and entertaining, and as a bonus, the mc's romantic interest is a vet, not someone in law enforcement. Huzzah! Four stars.
