I stayed up late last night to finish reading Gone With the Witch by Heather Blake. It's the sixth book in the "Wishcraft" mystery series, featuring Wishcrafter Darcy Merriweather.
Everyone in the Enchanted Village is excited for the annual Pawsitively Enchanted pet contest. The organizer, however, is afraid one of the contestants may be out to eliminate the competition, and she hires Darcy to keep an eye on Natasha. During her stint, Darcy learns that Natasha is having an affair with a married man, but she does not observe any shenanigans towards the other contestants. When Natasha drops dead at the event, poisoned, Darcy's investigation takes an entirely different course. In addition to the murder, pampered pets have begun disappearing, leading some to speculate there may be a pet-napper in their midst. Darcy is tabbed by the Elder to find out who killed Natasha to see if it was someone in the Craft.
Well now, there was quite a bit of activity going on. There was the murder, an attempted murder or two, the mystery of the disappearing pets, the conundrum of why and how Darcy and other Wishcrafters can now be photographed, the riddle of who the Elder really is, Aunt Ve's odd behavior, Darcy's new regard for an old rival, and the matter of who gets Natasha's prize-winning cat. I'm tempted to say it was too much, but the author wove things together quite neatly. I figured some things out early, and others threw me for a loop.
Favorite lines;
♦ "Just another day in this crazy life of mine."
♦ "I've become one of those women, haven't I? One who talks to her pets and expects an answer."
♦ No cat could resist the lure of a paper bag.
Very good story, four stars.
