My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Last night, I finished reading Something Borrowed, Something Mewed by Bethany Blake. It's part of her "Lucky Paws Petsitting" mystery series, which features Daphne Templeton: petsitter, dog walker, baker of organic pet treats, and amateur sleuth.
Daphne is excited about her sister Piper's upcoming wedding to staid Roger. However, both mothers, along with the wedding planner, are going overboard with their Independence Day theme. When Piper learns that Abigail, the wedding planner, overbooked the country club for wedding receptions, it seems the ceremony must be postponed. Daphne, who was pressed into taking care of Abigail's cat, goes out to her home, only to find the woman dead in the garden fountain. Suspicion for the murder falls on Roger, and Daphne takes it upon herself to prove his innocence, if only to put her sister's mind at ease.
In the meantime, Daphne is missing her own beau, Detective Jonathan Black, who's assisting NCIS in San Diego with a case. She keeps busy with her businesses, her investigation, and helping her BFF, Moxie, get ready for the All Paws on Deck gala that is coming up. However, when someone else is murdered, Daphne must put all of her skills to the test to find a killer before she ends up the next victim.
Enjoyable story, full of nifty twists and turns. Daphne is one of my favorite characters. She's so fresh and fun and zen. Ha ha!
Favorite line: "I feel like I'm an extra in Yankee Doodle Dandy!"
Very good, four stars
