Book 15, 2016
Feb. 16th, 2016 07:22 pmLast night, I finished reading Disappearing Nightly by Laura Resnick. The book is the first in the author's series, featuring stage actress Esther Diamond.
While performing in the chorus line of an off-Broadway production of Sorcerer!, Esther is as astonished as everyone else when the leading lady literally disappears during what was meant to be a magical illusion. As the understudy, it's up to Esther to take over for Golly Gee. However, Esther begins receiving messages, warning her against taking the lead role. When she takes the messages to the handsome police officer who is investigating Golly's disappearance, Esther gets the impression that Lopez is less than concerned.
Afraid for her safety, Esther begins looking into Golly's vanishing act. She soon learns that there have been other mysterious disappearances around New York, all during live stage acts. Esther teams up with Max, a 350-year old mage, a group of drag queens, and some other aspiring magicians to battle true Evil in the heart of New York City.
The book was pure crack, but in a good, laugh out loud way. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and the blossoming romance between Esther and Detective Lopez was worth the price of admission. I have at least one other book in the series, and I now plan to get the others.
Favorite lines (There was no way I could pick just one!):
♦ "Everything in the cosmos is essentially natural--except for certain forms of fast food, of course, and possibly some aspects of Los Angeles."
♦ "It would be just my luck to be the victim of a random homicide now..."
♦ "Why are you only wearing one shoe?" he asked. / "I lost the other. It upsets me to talk about it."
Good stuff! Five out of five!
