chez_jae: (Books)
Wednesday night, I plowed through the rest of Only the Good Die Young by Chris Marie Green. It's the first book in the author's series about Jensen Murphy, ghost for hire.

After Jensen was murdered, she continues to haunt her death spot as a residual imprint, until psychic medium Amanda Lee Mintner successfully pulls Jensen out of her "imprint" phase. In return, Amanda Lee wants Jensen to help her solve the murder of a woman, whom Amanda Lee was close to.

Amanda is convinced that Elizabeth was murdered by her former fiance, Gavin Edgett. She wants Jensen to haunt Gavin until he breaks and confesses to the crime. Jensen agrees, if only because she finds the case interesting. However, the more time she spends near Gavin, the more she believes he is innocent of the murder.

This was an intriguing book. I enjoyed the premise, although the prose got bogged down at times. Jensen must deal with Gavin and his dysfunctional family, and she meets other ghosts who help her learn about her abilities. She also encounters a darker spirit, who takes on the persona of her former boyfriend, in an attempt to lure Jensen into his "collection" of souls. I found those portions of the book to be annoying, because even though Jensen knew this entity wasn't Dean, she couldn't seem to stay away from him. I wanted to give her a dope slap.

I'm sort of on the fence about this one. As I said, the premise of the book was unique, but I had to slog through it at times. I'm going to give it a three-star rating, as average.
