Book 2, 2015
Jan. 4th, 2015 01:56 pmLast night, I completed On the Edge by Ilona Andrews, the first in her "Edge" series.
The world is comprised of two realms: the Weird, where magic is possible, and the Broken, where technology rules. Between them lies the Edge. Those who can travel between the realms live in the Edge, not really belonging to either the Weird or the Broken.
Rose Drayton is one such person. She's a young woman on her own, trying to raise her two younger brothers. Rose has extraordinary magic for an Edger, and when a blueblood from the Weird shows up, seemingly interested in Rose and her magic, she will do everything in her power to dissuade him. However, when magical beasts begin attacking people in the Edge, Rose and Declan must set aside their personal squabble and cooperate to save not only the Edge, but the Weird and the Broken, too.
This was an absorbing story. The worlds the author has created are believable and finely-crafted. Rose was an engaging protagonist. In spite of her magical abilities, she just wants to be left alone. When she is dragged into the fray, her bravery and practical nature impress even the aristocratic Declan. I confess I didn't like him at first (too pushy and arrogant!), but I warmed up to him by the book's end.
I'm looking forward to more books in this series. Five stars!
