Book 36, 2015
This afternoon, I finally finished reading Wickedly Dangerous by Deborah Blake. It is the first book in her series about the mythological Russian witch, Baba Yaga. The author works with the premise that Baba Yaga is not a single person, but rather a title of sorts that encompasses many different women.
This story revolves around Barbara Yager, who has been called to a small, rural town to investigate the mysterious disappearance of several children in the area. She travels in an enchanted Airstream with her companion, Chudo-Yudo, a dragon in the guise of a dog. Baba soon finds herself embroiled in small-town politics. Several residents welcome the money that fracking will bring to their area, while others oppose it because of environmental risks. Baba also finds herself to be maddeningly attracted to the sheriff, Liam McClellan.
This was a good book, but I had trouble getting into it. I began reading it at home, got bored with it and took it to work, then brought it home again to finish. The book was written in third person pov, and I've gotten used to reading first person pov, so that may have had something to do with not being able to get into it. It was a well-written story with lots of lore, a villain I loved to hate, and a wonderful, budding romance. I'll give it four stars:
★★★★
