Book 74, 2015
I stayed up a bit too late last night, but I finished reading Would-Be Witch, by Kimberly Frost. It's the first book in the author's "Southern Witch" series.
Tammy Jo Trask is descended from a family of witches, but she hasn't seemed to have inherited any magic. Her lone talent is the ability to see Edie, the family ghost. When Tammy's locket, which holds Edie's soul, is stolen, she will do anything to get it back, even enlist the aid of local wizard Bryn Lyons. Never mind that Tammy has been warned against having anything to do with anyone named Lyons.
I loved the characters in the story. Tammy Jo was a treat, and I also enjoyed reading about Zach, her ex-husband. Tammy still loves Zach, but she also finds herself attracted to the enigmatic Bryn. The author also created a nemesis for Tammy Jo, her old school rival Jenna. If I could have, I would have reached into the book and throttled that bitch. That's good writing for you! Secondary characters came through well, also, including Rollie, a cross-dressing vampire. Hah! The story also featured nasty werewolves, nosy neighbors, and loyal friends. In addition, Bryn gave Tammy Jo a familiar--an ocelot named Mercutio. I loved it! There are other books in the series, but I'm not sure I have them yet. If not, must remedy...
Five out of five!
